Spirulina : A Wonder Food Supplement

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that was once classified as a plant due its richness in plant pigments and its ability of photosynthesis. Spirulina is a free floating filamentous microalgae which grows in oceans and salty lake in subtropical climates.

Cultivated worldwide, it has been consumed for centuries due to its high nutritional value and supposed health benefits.  The nutritional value of spirulina is very high due to its protein content, richness in vitamin B12, minerals, essential fatty acids and other nutrients. It is consumed in the form of capsules, tablets, syrups and powder.

Spirulina contains an active compound called phycocyanin.It has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As a result it has anti-cancer properties and prevents oral cancer.Spirulina also provides enhanced endurance and increased muscle strength.

Spirulina provides a wide range of health benefits in diabetes, anaemia, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. A combination of zinc and spirulina helps in removal of arsenic in people with unusually high levels. Spirulina is also used as a supplement to treat malnutrition.

How to take care of a tulsi(basil) plant

Tulsi or holy basil is an incredible herb revered in Indian mythology for its medicinal and spiritual characteristics.Tulsi grows as a perennial plant in areas with mild winter and as an annual in cold and temperate climates.

Requirements for growing tulsi:

SOIL:

Tulsi grows well in loamy and fertile soil with good drainage.the pH level should be around 6 to 7.5 .

SUNLIGHT:

The holy basil requires at least four hours of sunlight a day. It thrives in full sun but it can grow in partial shade too.

WATERING:

We need to water the plant when the top soil gets dry. We should avoid overwatering. We need to reduce watering during winter to prevent diseases.

Tulsi plant care:

it is important to pinch off tops of tulsi when they are forming four or six pairs of leaves. It will make the plant grow bushier. Faded ,dicolored and crumpled leaves should be removed immediately to encourage the growth of new foliage . The flower buds should also be removed as it helps the plant to grow in a lush and bushier manner. Regular care for plant will help the plant to grow healthy.

FERTILIZER:

We need to give fertilizer to the plant to make them grow healthy. Some organic fertilizer includes banana peels,dried leaves,egg shells,coffee grounds,etc. All of the given substances include nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium which are very essential nutrients for the plants. 

PESTICIDES:

To prevent the invasion of insects and bugs on our plants we need to use pesticides on  the plant. An organic pesticide include onion and garlic puree diluted with water given to plants. We can also use a mild soap spray as a pesticide.We always need to keep in mind that pesticides should be given to plant during the evening in order to avoid the pesticide to affect the plant.
